Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, July 2010 [MultiFormat]
by Dell Magazine Authors
Category: Mystery/Crime
Description: Our July issue brings out the fireworks! Start with firecracker short-shorts from Lawrence Block, Zoë Sharp, and Phil Lovesey, in which, respectively, a murdered woman waits beyond the grave for justice (Block, "Without a Body"), a bodyguard on holiday has no patience for obnoxious fellow guests (Sharp, "Off-Duty"), and a husband finds some very tangled strings attached to his wife's designer eBay finds (Lovesey, "Intent").
For lighthearted sparklers, see Bill Pronzini's "The Body Snatchers," which finds Victorian-era P.I. John Quincannon investigating a grave robbery for one of San Francisco's finest families, and Judith Cutler's "A Fete Worse Than Death," wherein malicious vandals ensure there's more than the usual easy cleanup after a friendly English town's annual fete. In another small-town tale, Ed Gorman's "Tradition," a suspicious bicycle accident leads a 3rd-generation lawman to discover a family secret; and in a small-time crook's tale from William Link, an IRS agent is kidnapped so that a mob boss can pay his taxes ("The You-Gotta-Be-Kidding Kidnapping").
The big skyrockets come out with stories of a neglected wife who faces the truth about her life amid a natural disaster (Maud Tabachnik, "An Ordinary Woman," Passport to Crime), a tween boy whose kleptomania gets him and his community into bigger trouble than expected (David Dean, "The Vengeance of Kali"), an ex-Army man trying to survive the tying up of loose ends and his own terrible flashbacks (Dixon Hill, "Dancing in Mozambique"). And finally, there's the big finish: "Day for a Picnic," a 1963 Edward D. Hoch story that looks back at one tragic childhood summer.
