Near the Scottish-English Border
"So, who is this?" Stephen Sumervil spat out. The sharp point of his sword was at the younger man's throat, the light of a lantern shining along the blade. Only a twitch would be needed to open a gaping wound.
"You know who he is, Uncle," Moira answered.
Stephen Sumervil nodded his head. As chief of the Sumervil family, he was used to everyone waiting for him to speak. They were reivers, making a living by raiding and fighting across the Scottish-English border. Moira knew he was not about to rush for his niece and her lover who had been found together in the outbuildings. "So I do. And I know he's not welcome here."
Sixteen years of bending to her uncle's will was pushed aside in Moira's desire to defend her lover. "He is welcome here because I want him to be here, Uncle."
Stephen Sumervil's eyes flashed a warning look at Moira. "This is not your house, girl. You are not the head of this family. Your father is not the elder brother here, I am. I say who is welcome here, not some slip of a girl."
The younger man raised his hands out to the side in a gesture of peace. "I will leave. It's best."
"No, young Robert Bell," Stephen snapped, his temper rising quickly. "You will not leave." He did not know what he was going to do about finding his niece with one of the hated Bell family, but he was sure already that it was to end in Robert's death.
Robert's eyes went from Moira to her uncle and back. He had come peacefully to try and snatch a few moments with Moira. He certainly did not want to rekindle the endless feud between the Bells and the Sumervils. "Leave or stay? What game is this?"
"No game. It is my pleasure."
Moira looked around for help. The family was gathering now, roused from their sleep, and she hoped her parents would step forward to calm her uncle. She turned back to the pair of men with the sword between them. "Your pleasure is to torment us, Uncle."
"Shut up, girl. This is between me and this boy who has crept into my house, like his family has been creeping around our family, doing their evil tricks and taking good men's lives."
"My family does not creep," Robert protested. "And we do not know evil tricks."
Stephen prodded slightly with the sword, which drew a spot of blood from Robert's throat. "Well, I say they do."
"Not so."
"Aye, it is so. Like you climbing into my niece's bed at night as if you have the right to be there"
